wTrak Wood Train Table

A topographic wooden train table crafted from layered maple plywood scraps resalvaged from a job site. This table was designed and built to the modular wTrak standard, allowing it to connect seamlessly with other wTrak modules for large-scale setups.

The project began with a pile of plywood scraps saved from a dumpster at a job site. By laminating and stacking the sheets, I created custom multi-level topographic contours that form natural hills, valleys, and tunnel routing for wooden trains like Thomas & Friends.

Elevating Wooden Trains to a Hobbyist Level

The wTrak system was originally designed by Tom Stephenson, a professional aerospace engineer, to standardize wooden modular railways. Similar to model railroading standards like HO or N-scale modular layouts, wTrak modules join together at exhibitions to construct massive, collaborative layouts.

By building the table to these standards with built-in tunnels and bolted endpoints, the entire layout is incredibly sturdy and durable.
